The London Borough of Waltham Forest is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 56 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25. It is located in northeast London and has a population of 259,700 according to 2011 statistics.
The borough was formed in 1965 with the merging of Chingford, Leyton and Walthamstow which were formerly part of Essex. It is situated between London and Epping forest where it derives its name. The main populated areas include Chingford in the north, Walthamstow in the centre and Leyton and Leytonstone to the South. Walthamstow is the administrative centre for the borough and is also home to Britains longest street market with the nearby Walthamstow Village which is a conservation area having some sites of historical interest including the Vestry House Museum. The arts and crafts movement flourished within Waltham Forest with figureheads such as William Morris, The Morris family home, dating back to the mid 18th century, is now the William Morris Gallery located in Lloyd Park.
The borough has many connections to art, music and entertainment and notable residents have included David Beckham, Graham Gooch, Boyband East 17 and Alfred Hitchcock.
